Star Wars, Ferris Bueller drive Super Bowl ad buzz (Reuters)

Filed in superb Leave a comment

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? The Super Bowl is still two days away but some advertisers already are looking like winners as their yet-to-be-aired commercials score millions of hits online and rack up pre-game buzz.

A teaser for Volkswagen’s ad has drawn more than 11 million viewers on YouTube. The campaign features a pack of dogs barking out a “Star Wars” song, repeating a theme from the company’s well-received ad during last year’s Super Bowl. (http://link.reuters.com/nuq46s)

That level of pre-game hits is “astonishing,” according to Tim Calkins, marketing professor at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

“That would be a pretty good viewership for a primetime network television show,” Calkins said.

Several other Super Bowl ads, or at least short teaser spots, have popped up online to try to grab attention before the New England Patriots and New York Giants kick off on Sunday.

More advertisers are encouraging their agencies to upload their ads to websites like YouTube and Vimeo to generate as much buzz as possible, especially as the cost of 30-second commercial spots have soared to average at $3.5 million this year.

Ads getting notice include a Honda Motor Co spot with Matthew Broderick playing off his iconic film role as Ferris Bueller. In the commercial, the actor calls in sick and spends a day cruising around town in a Honda CR-V. (http://link.reuters.com/muq46s)

Another commercial features comedian Jerry Seinfeld reuniting briefly with the Soup Nazi from his 1990s television show, in a pitch for Honda’s Acura model. (http://link.reuters.com/puq46s)

Each of those spots were viewed more than 10 million times each within days of being uploaded on YouTube.

Automakers’ spots are drawing the most pre-game interest online, according to the CNBC/Collective Interactive Super Sunday Ad Tracker, which follows discussions on social media, blogs and other sources.

On Friday, Honda was leading in “total buzz” with more than 75,000 mentions, followed by Volkswagen with more than 55,000 mentions.

Soda maker Coca-Cola, which is bringing back its Arctic polar bears, ranked first among non-car companies with more than 17,000 mentions. (http://link.reuters.com/quq46s)

For many advertisers, the pre-game attention will provide a big boost. But there is some risk to releasing ads in advance – if people have already heard about the ads and know the punchlines, they may use commercial breaks to grab a snack.

“If it’s one of the top three or four (before the game), that’s going to help it,” said Charles Taylor, marketing professor at the Villanova School of Business.

For less popular spots, “you already know what’s in the ad. There’s not any suspense left,” he said.

According to executives from Comcast Corp’s NBC television network, broadcaster of the Super Bowl game, a 30-second commercial slot cost $3.5 million on average this year, up from $3 million for last year’s Super Bowl, which was on News Corp’s Fox station.

An expected 100 million people will watch the game, among a dwindling number of TV programs that still draw big live audiences.

The Super Bowl, including lower-priced halftime slots, could easily generate over a quarter of a billion dollars in ad sales.

Anheuser-Busch, which typically buys exclusivity as the only beer advertiser during recent Super Bowls, is again the biggest spender, according to industry sources.

Coke and PepsiCo Inc will face off for soda supremacy with campaigns that attempt to leverage social media after their commercials air.

“The Super Bowl has really gone from being a one-day advertising event to being a month-long extravaganza,” Calkins said. “Many advertisers will be happy with their Super Bowl participation even before the game begins.”

Patriots prevail vs. Ravens

Baltimore misses late TD, FG as N.E. wins AFC Championship 23-20

The?Patriots celebrate after Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff misses a game-tying field goal in the final seconds of Sunday’s AFC Championship game.

By BARRY WILNER

updated 10:59 p.m. ET Jan. 22, 2012

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Tom Brady got all the help he needed to get the New England Patriots into the Super Bowl.

Thank you, Billy Cundiff.

The Baltimore Ravens kicker shanked a 32-yard field goal with 11 seconds left and the Patriots escaped with a 23-20 victory in the AFC championship game on Sunday.

Usually, vintage Brady doesn’t need much assistance in championship settings, but the Patriots much-maligned defense came through, and Brady’s 1-yard touchdown dive with 11:29 left proved to be the winning points.

“Well, I sucked pretty bad today, but our defense saved us,” Brady said after throwing for 239 yards, with two interceptions and, for the first time in 36 games, no TD passes. “I’m going to try to go out and do a better job in a couple of weeks, but I’m proud of this team, my teammates.”

Brady waited out the final tense minutes on the sideline, and then celebrated with the rest of his team when Cundiff’s attempt went wide left. The Ravens looked on in stunned horror.

Cundiff had no excuse.

“It’s a kick I’ve kicked probably a thousand times in my career,” Cundiff said. “I went out there and didn’t convert. That’s the way things go.”

Next up as the Patriots chase their fourth Super Bowl trophy in Brady and coach Bill Belichick’s tenure in New England is the New York Giants, who beat the San Francisco 49ers 20-17 in overtime Sunday night.

The Patriots were installed as 3-point favorites for the Super Bowl on Feb. 5 in Indianapolis.

In their last trip to the big game, the Patriots had an 18-0 record when they were stunned by the Giants four years ago. They won the NFL championship for the 2001, 2003 and 2004 seasons. This time, they head to the Super Bowl with a 10-game winning streak.

Before Cundiff missed, the Ravens had a chance to go ahead two plays earlier, but wide receiver Lee Evans was stripped of the ball in the end zone by backup cornerback Sterling Moore, who earlier was victimized for a touchdown that gave Baltimore (13-5) the lead 17-16.

On his touchdown, Brady took a huge hit from Ravens star linebacker Ray Lewis, then emphatically spiked the ball as he walked away. Earlier, Brady showed his fire by barking at Lewis following a hard tackle on a 4-yard run.

“It’s a pretty mentally tough team,” said Brady, whose fifth trip to the Super Bowl will equal John Elway’s achievement with Denver. “There’s really some resiliency. We’ve shown that all season. Even in the games we’ve lost, the three games we lost, we fought until the end. We’re always going to fight to the end. It’s great to be a part of a team like this.”

Baltimore had the touted defense in this matchup, but New England’s unit, ranked 31st overall, was just as powerful.

“We stepped up,” Pro Bowl nose tackle Vince Wilfork said. “We all stepped up big time. Being in this situation is a great moment. You have to cherish this moment.”

The Patriots shut down Ray Rice, the league’s total yardage leader, who was limited to 78 yards. Brandon Spikes made a fourth-quarter interception of Joe Flacco, who played well before that and threw for two touchdowns. And when the Ravens were threatening to score a late touchdown to win their first conference title in 11 years, New England clamped down.

“It’s two great football teams, two gladiators, I guess, just kind of going at each other at the end, and I’m proud of our guys,” Harbaugh said. “You know, we’ve got 53 guys, mighty men, as we like to call them ? and they fought, and we came up a little bit short, as 53. You know, 53 win and 53 lose.”

With Rice a nonfactor, Baltimore had to rely on Flacco, and he delivered one of his best performances. Flacco has led the Ravens into the playoffs in all four of his pro seasons, but not to the Super Bowl. He was 22 for 36 for 306 yards and touchdowns of 6 yards to Dennis Pitta and 29 to rookie Torrey Smith.

The loss hardly could be blamed on Flacco.

“I don’t know if I ever will prove anything,” he said. “I just play the same way. We lost; someone has to. But we laid it all out on the field.”

Pats end Broncos’ 6-game streak

New England’s 41-23 win halts Denver’s win streak at six games

updated 7:28 p.m. ET Dec. 18, 2011

DENVER – Not this time, Tim Tebow.

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots shut down Tebow’s late-game heroics and clinched a playoff berth with a 41-23 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

The Patriots (11-3) won their sixth straight game and another AFC East title by bouncing back from an early 17-6 deficit and an awful first quarter in which they were outgained on the ground 167 yards to 4.

This time, there was no last-minute magic from Tebow, who had guided the Broncos (8-6) to four straight fourth-quarter comebacks and six straight wins.

Instead of another slow start followed by a fantastic finish, the Broncos started out fast and then fizzled. They scored on their first three possessions and then were done in by a trio of second-quarter turnovers.

Champ Bailey had said the Broncos needed a big game against a big QB to prove to themselves and others that they were not just a curiosity but a contender.

They didn’t get it on this day.

Denver has faced four quarterbacks currently ranked in the top-10 in yards passing ? Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, Philip Rivers (twice) and Brady. They’re 1-4 in those games.

Brady, who was 23 of 34 for 320 yards with two TD passes and a touchdown run, made up for another bad day by the Patriots’ defense to beat the Broncos for the second time in eight career starts ? the only team with a winning record against the three-time Super Bowl champion.

With its first loss since Oct. 30, the AFC West-leading Broncos face a tougher path to the playoffs, with a trip to Buffalo next week followed by a season finale against Kansas City, which ended Green Bay’s 19-game winning streak Sunday behind Kyle Orton, the player Tebow replaced in Denver.

Tebow fell to 7-2 as Denver’s starter.

The Broncos’ 167 yards rushing in the first quarter ? 11 more than their league-leading per-game average ? represented the biggest output in any quarter of the Bill Belichick era in New England. They finished with 252.

Tebow slipped a tackle in the backfield by Rob Ninkovich and darted his way for a 9-yard TD on the game’s opening drive. Lonnie Paxton’s bad snap prevented Matt Prater from kicking the extra point.

Brady needed five snaps to put the Patriots ahead 7-6 with a 33-yard touchdown toss to Chad Ochocinco, his first score since Nov. 21, 2010, for Cincinnati at Buffalo.

The Broncos responded by going 80 yards in four plays and scoring again. Willis McGahee reeled off a 29-yard run and then retreated to the sideline with what appeared to be a left hamstring injury. Tebow hit Demaryius Thomas for 22 yards before tailback Lance Ball took it in from 32 yards out for his first TD run of his career to make it 13-7.

Denver’s next drive stalled at the 8, and coach John Fox decided not to go for it and Prater’s field goal made it 16-7.

That’s when the Patriots went to the no-huddle and Brady capped an impressive drive with a 1-yard touchdown throw to Aaron Hernandez, who set career highs with nine catches for 129 yards. That made it 16-14.

The Broncos’ ball-control offense stumbled after that.

Ball fumbled at his own 19 and Ninkovich recovered, leading to Stephen Gostkowski’s 21-yard field goal put the Patriots up for good at 17-16.

Then, defensive end Mark Anderson, subbing for Andre Carter, who injured his left knee earlier in the game, forced and recovered a fumble by Tebow at the Broncos 40. Six plays later, Brady took it in himself from a yard out to make it 24-16.

Brady audibled at the line and just inched the nose of the football across the goal line with 1:08 left in the first half, then celebrated his eighth career TD with a masterful spike.

After some questionable play calling by Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, the Broncos punted the ball back to the Patriots with 40 seconds left. They held, but Broncos punt returner Quan Cosby tried to field a punt on the run and muffed it with three seconds left. Dane Fletcher recovered for New England and Gostkowski trotted out for a 34-yard field goal to make it 27-16 at halftime.

After Danny Woodhead’s 10-yard TD run made it 34-16, Tebow’s 2-yard keeper with 8:41 left pulled the Broncos to 34-23, but Brady responded in a big way, leading the Patriots on another 80-yard scoring drive, this one culminating in BenJarvus Green-Ellis’ 1-yard TD run.

Tebow was 11 of 22 for 194 yards and added 93 more on 12 carries. Late in the fourth quarter, he was dropped for a 28-yard sack by Ninkovich, a bad ending to a big week for the second-year pro from Florida.

During the week, Tebow cemented his role as a cultural phenomenon as he was the subject of a skit on “Saturday Night Live,” his name was brought up in the GOP debate in Sioux City, Iowa, and two high school students were suspended for organizing several “Tebowing” kneel-downs in tribute to the Broncos QB.

Willie Gault’s Stolen Super Bowl Ring Found In LA Pawn Shop

Filed in superb Leave a comment

LOS ANGELES — Police say the stolen 1985 Super Bowl ring of Chicago Bears wide receiver Willie Gault has been recovered from a downtown Los Angeles jewelry store.

Los Angeles police said in a statement Saturday that Gault’s ring from the Bears’ victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX along with a wedding ring and five stolen watches were found Thursday. The jewelry was stolen in a Nov. 8 home burglary.

Police say 46-year-old store owner Ramin Cohan of Beverly Hills was arrested on suspicion of receiving stolen property. He was released Friday after posting $20,000 bail.

Detectives received a tip from a source who said he had seen the ring at the store.

Police also recovered a 1983 Washington Redskins Super Bowl ring, and are looking for the owner.
